Incognito Mode Isn't as Private as You Think What It Really Hides (and Doesn't)
The word "incognito" does a lot of heavy lifting. It sounds like a cloak of invisibility for your browsing — but what it actually does is much narrower, and much more specific, than most people assume.
Nearly every browser has some version of it: Chrome calls it Incognito Mode, Safari and Firefox call it Private Browsing, Edge calls it InPrivate. Whatever the name, the idea seems simple — open one of these windows, and suddenly you're browsing "privately." But privately from whom, exactly? That's the question most people never actually stop to ask, and the answer is a lot narrower than the name suggests.
What Incognito Mode Actually Does
At its core, incognito mode is designed to solve one specific problem: not leaving a trace on the device you're using. That's genuinely useful, but it's a much smaller promise than "total privacy."
Specifically, when you close an incognito window, your browser doesn't save:
- Browsing history — the list of sites you visited

Your Employer or School Network Can Often Still Monitor Activity
If you're using a work laptop, a school-issued device, or even just connected to a company or school Wi-Fi network, incognito mode generally does nothing to hide your activity from network administrators. Many organizations use network monitoring tools that operate completely independently of your browser, or install management software directly on the device that can track activity regardless of which browsing mode you're using.
Your IP Address Is Still Visible
Every device connecting to the internet has something called an IP address, which can reveal a rough general location and is visible to every website you visit, incognito or not. Incognito mode doesn't mask, change, or hide your IP address in any way — that requires a completely different tool, like a VPN.
Downloads and Bookmarks Usually Still Stick Around
Depending on your browser, files you download or bookmarks you save while in an incognito window may still persist after you close it — incognito mode is mainly about browsing history and site data, not necessarily everything you actively choose to save.
A Helpful Way to Think About It
Imagine incognito mode as reading a book somewhere private, then putting it back on the shelf without leaving a bookmark or dog-earing any pages — nobody who picks up that same book afterward will know you read it, or where you left off. But the bookstore that sold you the book still knows you bought it, the road you drove to get there is still the same road, and anyone who saw you walk in still saw you walk in. What Actually Would Give You More Privacy
Since incognito mode is fairly narrow in scope, here's how the tools compare if your goal is genuinely staying more private online:
- Want to avoid leaving history on a shared device? Incognito mode is exactly the right tool.
- Want to hide your browsing from your internet provider or local network? You'd need a VPN, which encrypts and reroutes your traffic so it's much harder for your provider or network to see which sites you're visiting.
- Want to avoid being tracked and profiled by advertisers across the web? Incognito mode helps a little (since cookies get wiped when you close the window), but dedicated tracker-blocking extensions or privacy-focused browsers go much further.
- Want to hide your identity from the websites you visit? Neither incognito mode nor a VPN fully does this on their own — especially the moment you log into any account tied to your real identity.
Why This Matters
None of this is meant to say incognito mode is useless — it genuinely does what it says on the tin. The issue is purely with the expectations people bring to it. Believing you're fully anonymous online because you opened a private window can lead to a false sense of security in situations where it really doesn't apply — like assuming a work laptop's incognito mode hides your browsing from IT, when it very likely doesn't.
